Notice at collection (California)
If you are a California resident, here is what we collect at or before the point of collection: identifiers such as your email address when you subscribe; contact information you send us (name, email, phone) when you use the contact form; a coded (hashed) version of the IP address used at signup, not the address itself; your city edition; and, unless you choose Essential only, cookie and analytics identifiers and page activity. We use these to send the magazine, keep the list healthy, understand what is working on the site, and measure our advertising. We do not sell your email address or subscriber list. Unless you choose Essential only, our advertising partners Meta and Vibe get information about your visit and signup. Meta's tools run on city pages that have a signup form, and Meta gets your IP address and your email address in hashed form when you sign up. Vibe runs only on city home pages. California and some other states may count this as “selling” or “sharing” personal information. You can opt out at any time on our Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information page. Full details follow below.

We do not create or sell separate inference profiles about you, and we do not intentionally collect sensitive personal information.
Where it comes from
Directly from you when you subscribe, unsubscribe, send an opt out request, or write to us with the contact form; from your browser through cookies, local storage, and signals such as Global Privacy Control; and from our email delivery service, which reports delivery, click, bounce, and complaint events.
When you sign up, we record how you found us, such as a search, a social post, or a link someone shared. We use this only to understand what brings readers to the newsletter.
When you click a link in a newsletter email, we record which link you used so we can see what readers care about. We do not track whether you opened the email.
How we use it
Sending the magazine you asked for; keeping the list accurate and honoring unsubscribes and opt outs; understanding site performance when you allow analytics; measuring whether our advertising leads households to visit or subscribe; and protecting the site and the signup form from abuse.
Who processes it
magazine.ltd (the editor) runs the list and this site. Replit hosts the site, its API, and its database. To do that, Replit handles each request and keeps logs for running and securing the site, such as request times, the pages asked for, IP addresses, and browser details. Resend delivers the magazine. It receives your email address, your city, and an internal subscriber ID so we can match delivery reports to your subscription.
PostHog provides website analytics. In your browser it loads when you visit, unless you choose Essential only. When someone signs up, we tell PostHog the city, with nothing that identifies the person. We link a signup to your analytics profile, and add your ZIP code, unless you choose Essential only. If your browser sends Global Privacy Control or you have opted out of sale or sharing on this browser, we do not send PostHog even the signup count.
Meta and Vibe measure our advertising. Meta does this with the Meta Pixel in your browser and the Meta Conversions API on our server. Both Meta tools and Vibe run unless you choose Essential only, your browser sends Global Privacy Control, or you have opted out of sale or sharing. Meta receives the page address, page views, a signup event, your email address in hashed form, your IP address, browser details, and its own cookie IDs, plus your ZIP code in hashed form if you already gave it to us. Vibe runs only on city home pages. It receives page views, a signup event, its own cookie ID, your IP address, and browser details. We do not send Vibe your email address.
A necessary first-party session cookie keeps the editor signed in to the admin page.
Messages you send us
If you write to us with the contact form, we collect your name, your email address, your phone number if you give one, your message, and the city site you wrote from. To block spam and abuse we also keep a hashed form of your network address and the results of our automated checks, never the address itself.
We use this only to read and reply to your note, to add context or correct an article, and to protect the form from abuse. Phone is optional. We use it only to call you back about your note. We never text it and never use it for marketing. Writing to us does not add you to the mailing list, and we do not sell or share what you send.
Replit hosts the form and stores messages in our database. Resend delivers each message to the editor's mailbox and keeps a copy of the email for up to 30 days. Google hosts the editor's mailbox. A copy without your phone number goes to a receive-only inbox on the platform that runs our reader feedback assistant, which helps us sort and log notes.
We delete feedback messages from our database 90 days after we receive them, and messages we hold or reject as spam after 30 days. Messages that reach the editor's mailbox stay there for up to 1 year and are then deleted. Our reader feedback assistant keeps a log of notes for 90 days; it holds no phone numbers and no full message text.
Editor applications
If you apply for an editor job with the contact form, we also collect your resume or LinkedIn link, the cities you want to cover, links to your published work, your preferred rate, any note, and any resume file you attach (PDF or DOCX, up to 10 MB). We use this only to consider you for an editor role.
Files are stored privately in our database, are never published on the site, and only the editor can open them. The editor gets an email with your application but not your file. The copy sent to our reader feedback assistant holds only the application type, the cities you named, the time and a reference number: no name, contact details, links or file.
We delete your application and any file 6 months after we receive them, automatically, or sooner if you ask. To ask, send us a note with the contact form and we will delete them. The email about your application in the editor's mailbox is deleted on the same schedule.
Cookies on this site
Necessary cookies are always on. One remembers your cookie choice, one remembers if you opted out of sale or sharing, and one keeps our editor signed in to the admin page. Our hosting provider's infrastructure, run by Google, also sets a necessary GAESA cookie that lasts 30 days.
After you sign up, or click a link in one of our newsletters, we keep a small note in your browser so we stop asking you to subscribe. It holds no email address or identifier, is never sent to us, is cleared when you unsubscribe on our site, and expires after 180 days, or 45 days if it came from a newsletter link.
Optional cookies are set when you visit unless you choose Essential only, and never if your browser sends Global Privacy Control or you have opted out of sale or sharing. PostHog sets analytics cookies on our site and stores some data in your browser. Meta sets its _fbp cookie, and its _fbc cookie when you reach us by clicking a link on Facebook, such as one of our ads. Vibe sets its own cookie on city home pages.
If you choose Essential only, we stop setting optional cookies, and Meta and Vibe get nothing more from your visit. If you sign up, PostHog gets only a count that someone signed up in your city, with nothing that identifies you. If you switch to Essential only later, we stop these tools and delete our analytics cookies. Switching to Essential only removes the Meta and Vibe cookies from this browser. You can change your choice anytime. Use Cookie preferences at the bottom of every page, or opt out with Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information.
Advertising partners: Meta and Vibe
Analytics and ad cookies from PostHog, Meta and Vibe load by default. Choose Essential only, use Do Not Sell or Share, or turn on Global Privacy Control in your browser, and we stop them and clear their cookies.
We use the Meta Pixel, the Meta Conversions API, and the Vibe pixel to measure how well our ads bring in new readers. The Meta Pixel and the Vibe pixel run in your browser. The Conversions API runs on our server and tells Meta when you sign up or confirm that you want the magazine again. They run unless you choose Essential only on our cookie banner, your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, or you have opted out of sale or sharing.
When they run, Meta may receive:
- the address of the page you are viewing;
- a page view and, when you sign up or confirm that you want the magazine again, a signup event;
- your email address in hashed form (turned into a code), never as plain text, so Meta can match it to a Meta account that uses the same email;
- your IP address and browser details;
- Meta's own cookie IDs (_fbp and _fbc), if present;
- your ZIP code in hashed form, only if you have already given it to us.
Vibe runs only on city home pages. It receives page views, a signup event when you sign up there, its own cookie ID, your IP address, and browser details. We do not send Vibe your email address.
If you choose Essential only, your browser sends Global Privacy Control, or you have opted out of sale or sharing, none of this is sent from that point on. You can change your choice anytime. Use Cookie preferences at the bottom of every page, or opt out with Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information.

Sale and sharing
We do not sell, rent, or trade the subscriber list, we do not share it for another company's own marketing, and we do not sell your email address. Unless you choose Essential only, the Meta and Vibe advertising tools send information about your visit and signup to those companies. For Meta, this includes your email address in hashed form. California and some other states may count this as “selling” or “sharing” personal information. You can opt out at any time on our Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information page, with one click and no email needed. We also honor the Global Privacy Control signal. We honor these opt outs from readers in every state.
Your choices
Choose Essential only on the cookie banner to turn optional cookies off, and change your choice anytime with the Cookie preferences link at the bottom of every page. Unsubscribe from the list using the link at the bottom of any issue. Opt out of sale or sharing on Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat you as Essential only and as opted out of sale or sharing, so optional analytics and advertising tools stay off.
California privacy rights
California residents can ask to know and access the personal information we hold, correct it, delete it, opt out of its sale or sharing, and limit the use of sensitive personal information (we do not intentionally collect sensitive personal information). We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights. To exercise them, email editor@magazine.ltd or use Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information.
Children
magazine.ltd is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
Leaving the list
Click the unsubscribe link at the bottom of any issue and explicitly confirm on the unsubscribe page. The confirmation protects against automated email link scanners. You leave only the city edition that email came from, and we stop emailing you that edition. Any other city edition you get is not changed. If our email service reports a bounce or a spam complaint, we stop emailing that address. We retain a suppression record so your choice is honored if the address is submitted again. If you sign up again after leaving, we email you a link, and you are back on the list only after you click the button on our confirmation page. We record when you confirmed. To request deletion, email the address printed on an issue.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page before it takes effect.
